Happy New Year to all! Guess what my new year’s resolution is?
UPDATE MORE FREQUENTLY.
Yes, guilty, I admit
The genius in me forgot to click publish, save only instead so…
Just a teaser filler till the next post which I assure you will be picture filled! Updates next on our subsequent RR visits and the fun Christmas bash at Agathians (which I missed).
Meanwhile, here’s a video our new VidRascalMay compiled. She’s our unofficial videographer now!
Enjoy, and till then, Happy 2008!
Back!
It has been ages since our last update (yes, there are only three in total). Please, do forgive us. We’re still students juggling erratic times for our classes amidst assignments, exams and a gazillion deadlines (Okay, I grudgingly admit, it’s mainly myself)! Since our last update though, we’ve been to Agathians Shelter approximately 2-3 times. We’ve settled into some sort of a routine with some kids being trained musically and the rest being entertained by our child-friendly volunteers.
Things are going on track so far for our March 2008 (anticipated date) event and not too many kinks have appeared. Of course, we would like all of you out there to pray (for the religious folk) and hope (for the nonreligious folk) for this whole shindig to move smoothly.
Soon, I’ll be posting information on volunteers we will need for the event itself and for our weeklies to the home. Hopefully, this all will be up next week – I like everything to be put up early.
Meanwhile, here are a couple of pictures and a short anecdote on what went on during one of our previous visits (twas all written earlier but, unfortunately, pictures came later). Enjoy!

Manic Footie!
I mean the title very literally. The objective of this visit was to audition the older kids (older being 11 and above). Christy our hotmama MusicRascal was MIA for a photoshoot so Rav and Raavi of Diplomats of Drum came in to help.
This week our very gracious volunteers came in the form of footie fanatics — Pek Wah (with her futsal ball and her cute minifootball) and Izmir. You see, with only half of the kids being auditioned (one on one if I might add!), the other 29 odd kids have to be entertained in some way. So we figured, why not let them enjoy a favourite Malaysian past-time? A round of footie in the park!
After an attempted round of charades, we decided to just let the kids run wild at the park with the balls. Let’s just say 29 kids and only 6-7 inexperienced young adults were mildly disastrous. Not all the kids ended up playing footie and the younger ones had mini races around the park which resulted in a lot of cheating. It was really amusing to watch and we’re glad the kids seemed to have loads of fun and were reluctant to leave.
Subsequent visits to the shelter will involve a lot of play with the kids so, like I said earlier, extra hands would be very appreciated. The boys don’t take long to warm up and before you know it, they’ll be clamoring to hold your hand.
Some pictures and till next time, which, i guarantee, will be in the near future. =)

Support us!
I know it seems kinda weird that there haven’t been updates for awhile. Just to explain – we’ve had some… erm… technical difficulties of the late. For those of you who aren’t aware of the motives and the aims of this project, let me share them with you.
We hope to ending this phase with a bang and we’re currently in the midst of planning a large-scale event to raise funds for the orphanage. We’re talking carnival-like setting at preferably, a mall with booths selling food, clothes, fashion accessories, the works and performances by big names in the local industry – both indie and mainstream.
We have had a few problems finding locations for desired dates and so on, so forth. Not to mention the legalities of such an event. Our major trial is that we have never (quite literally, never) planned, hosted or executed anything as large scale as we’re aiming to right now!
But fret not, we know we can do it!
Right now, we need your support. If by any chance you (yes, you! reader!) have any mode of support or ideas you’d like to share with us feel free to contact any one of us or leave a comment here. Or if you’d even like to take a trip with us to the orphanage on a Sunday, don’t hesitate to leave a note here or email one of us (emails can be found in the Team page).
A note, if any of you guys out there have Facebook, feel free to add us =) just click here! Or if you just want to spread the word, link us up on your blog/webpage. Permission not required =)
Kickoff!
update: photos now included! =)

Today, the Rhythm Rascals Project officially kicked-off it’s first phase.

We spent 2 hours in Agathians Shelter in PJ with approximately 30 children. Christy, May and I (Xinch) got there at approximately 3PM with our friends and volunteers – DannyK, John Thomas and some Diplomats of Drum members.

Boy were the kids mighty excited to see us! Between Danny’s DSLR and the percussions, they were spoiled for choice and attention. We started the session with the obligatory self-introduction. “Flying Singh” of Diplomats of Drums was our conductor for the day and he wasted no time in getting the kids up on their feet and dancing to the steady beats of Bhangra. After a short performance by the band, the kids were quickly seated in a large (albeit distorted) circle and the exciting part began — the passing of instruments. Djembes, shakers, triangles and all sorts of percussions were passed round to 30 odd kids and surprisingly (and thankfully), each child had an instrument in their hand. “Flying Singh” taught the kids to conduct the session in a variation of wild hand and body movements and soon enough, they were jamming along with us like pros!

After an hour, we gave them a relaxing break outside where Flying Singh conducted a tai-chi-like session of breathe in and out lift your hands up and so on. When they got back in, the jamming session commenced. The tough part came when we were rotating instruments. Typical of children, everyone wanted the snare, the djembes, or the dhols.
We managed to teach some of the kids to use some instruments properly but unfortunately, manpower was tight and we did not manage to individually teach or assess every one of them, which is something we intend on doing during the following sessions.

We managed to fulfill the main purpose of this session – introducing the children to the music and getting them pumped up! They seemed very excited at the prospect of us returning for more and it was very endearing when they refused to part with some of the instruments, beating them all the way to the gate.

From that jamming session alone, we managed to pick out a few of the children who were surprisingly adept at handling the djembe and the snare. Natural talent – not all of us are blessed with it! We hope to follow the progress of these talented ones and definitely hope to discover more of their talents.

Soon, there will be a PicasaWeb account up that will be linked directly to this page. Meanwhile, I’ll leave you with more photos. =)
